White Day!

White Day was on the 14th of March and if you have read my Valentines Day post, then you know what it is! In Japan, and a few other asian countries, White Day is where the guys give something to their significant other or friend etc. as opposed to Valentines Day where the girls give to the guys.

This year, mine and Jun's schedules didn't match up to well and so the actual day wasn't that amazing, but because Jun is Jun and loves to surprise people, he snuck this GORGEOUS cheesecake into the spare room where I wouldn't see it, and after dinner nonchalantly said "Go look in the other room." It took me a while to process what and why but I soon picked up on his sneakiness and shot off to see what was there. And isn't it a beauty! It tasted so soo good as well. I love how dainty looking it is...I mean was... it's long gone now lol but look at how pretty it is/was!! I reckon something like this would cost about $40 in New Zealand, but of course it would be twice as big and twice as thick!! Jun always laughs at how important dessert is where I'm from. If you don't understand why I stress it so much.. read this and feel my pain.

I didn't get chocolates or cookies for White Day, I got something even better! We were in Osaka in the weekend for Jun's high school mates wedding reception, and I was pretty hungry afterwards because you can't really eat while holding a 7 month old with tentacles for arms. So we went out to find something to eat and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a sign that said NARS. There was no discussion. I was there in seconds while Jun was left in my dust wondering where I'd gotten to. I went straight to the bronzer section and picked out Laguna which I NEED or I will die *serious face*. I  have been searching and searching for somewhere to buy NARS products in Tokyo forever! And it was driving me crazy because I had hit pan with my Laguna bronzer like a year ago and stopped using it in fear of it running out completely! Don't act like you don't do that too, I see you ;) But I just didn't know where to get it from. And my darling husband bought it for me for White Day! :D Best gift evaaah! He asked the lady if Nars products were available in Tokyo and she was like, Yeah! The biggest store in Japan is in Shinjuku! -___-" I live like 30 minutes away from Shinjuku and all this time it's been right under my nose -___-"But oh well I have it now! ^___^

Isn't it the most gorgeous bronzer you've ever seen!! It is soooo niiiice! I should do a review on how good it is/much I love it.

And that was White Day! I didn't even remember it until I went grocery shopping and saw White Day signs everywhere lol. It's not a day that I'm used to, but hey, if it means getting awesome cheesecake and Nars products, lets make it twice a year! ^_^

Reia update: She has learnt how to scream her little lungs out and will constantly scream just for the fun of it. Makes listening to music and watching tv a little bit harder lol. She loves looking at her hands and pictures of herself. She has upgraded from sleeping on thick folded blankets on the floor to her very own futon! And it's pretty big so it should last her until she's a teen or so. She barely takes up a quarter of the space at the mo, and those blankets were quite comfy by the way! We sleep on the floor in Japan so it's fine. She rolled over all by herself last week but doesn't seem to want to keep it up. Can't believe she's already 7 and a half months!

Hina Matsuri (Girl's Festival)

Girl's Festival in Japan is held on the 3rd of March, so this blog is about a week overdue. I am not really familiar with what Japanese actually do on this day... except for eating pink things and setting up huge doll displays. ^_^

The only time I remember any kind of Girl's Day commemoration was during my internship in Aichi-ken, 2009. One day during lunch time, we were all given a very pink meal which looked SO GOOD! And it was :) Everything tasted amazing! When I think about it, it was just cake and yoghurt and fruit etc. But it was a treat compared to the usual noodles and soup combination!

This year, Jun's parents bought us our very first doll set :D We asked if they could get the smallest set they could find just because our house is so tiny! Some displays are 1 meter up, down, and across! That is pretty much our bathroom lol. So we set up the display and there was some pink candy to go along side it too. Then we took off to the park! This was Reia's first time at a park and I think she enjoyed going down the slide and rocking on the horsies! The park that we went to is GORGEOUS during Autumn! I bet it is just as beautiful during the Sakura season too:D But on this particular day, it was freeeeezing cold. But that didn't stop all the little children from bouncing on this huge white cloud looking thing with no shoes on!

Mika playing on the play ground

We stayed at the park for a couple of hours while Mika, Reia's cousin, played on the playground. After that, we wet home and started preparing dinner! On the menu was SUSHI! I think you can never go wrong with sushi ;) There was a whole bunch on sliced up fish to choose from. I always go for the salmon :D At one point, Jun's Dad started teaching me how to eat it and said that you can even add kiwifruit to it! And I was thinking eeewww kiwifruit in sushi?? It would be sour as! And he continued on teaching  me until the rest of the family picked up on what he was saying and said "AVOCADO!" Hahaha he had mistaken kiwifruit for avocado :D I was gonna say!! Anyways, we ate until we were stuffed! And had a special yummy cake afterwards.

First time on the playground! She was trying to brace herself the whole time lol

Sushi!

The whanau

Our mini doll display, cake, and snacks!

The only way Reia would stop crying and trying to grab everyones food was by giving her a spoon lol.

We had a lovely day spending time with family and eating good food.
And that was Reia's first Hina Matsuri :)

7 Months Today!

I know. It's been a while since last posted anything... and you have all been patiently waiting for my next post! Right? :D

Today, Reia is 7 months old! She is well over the half year mark and is growing so fast!! She hasn't had a check up in a while so according to my own measurements with my not-so trusty scales and tape measure, she is something like 9kg and 66cm. At her last check up, she was 7.8kg and 62cm and that was a month and a half ago, so somewhere along those lines!
She if full of smiles and has settled into her daily routine very smoothly. She naps 2-3times a day for 1-2 hours at a time. She only cries if she tired, hungry, wants mummy, or has done number twos. Apparently she wouldn't mind staying in her wet nappy all day lol.

Here are some things she can/likes to do:
  • Eat solid food and create a great mess.
  • Sit up by herself. She hasn't quite figured out how to reach out and grab something while maintaing her balance yet. She just topples right over.
  • Watch Sesame Street! If i am ever in a pinch and need to do something quick (bad parenting coming up!) I put in a DVD and let her watch a bit of Sesame Street and she just stares at it and starts giggling along with Elmo. I try to limit TV to times of desperation only! Before I would just plonk in a DVD and enjoy my moments of me-time, but I have since learned that it delays language development :/ Oops!
  • She likes to play peekaboo under the sheets! She has this kind of infatuation with the wind because it literally takes her breath away and she loves that gush of surprise! So we play the sheet game all the time :)
  • She can put her dummy in her mouth by herself! Well, 7/10 times. Helps out heaps during nap/bed time!
  • She squeals during tickle time. When she laughs in anticipation, her face goes all rigid and set in the same expression but the laugh changes, its funny.
  • When she smiles, her tongues is always curled to the back. I don't know why she does that lol
  • Her cry (the one where she has had enough!) sounds like a mix between Gollum's and a Ring Wraith's cry. Very waily, high pitched, and screechy!
  • When her Daddy comes home, she now give him big happy smiles and is very excited to see him :D She used to cling to me for a while but she is finally warming up to him!
And some things she can't/doesn't like to do:
  • Roll over. Well, I take that back because she has done it by herself a couple of times but it's not consistent. Usually when I try to help her do this, I'll twist her legs so she rolls on to her tummy and then she'll just go lazy and lie there lol.
  • Crawl. She tries to bring her knees up to her chest but isn't very good at it >_< I hear from Mothers that once they're mobile they're a bigger handful than before, so I don't mind if she takes her sweet time!
  • Sleep through the night. She used to sleep for 4 hours at a time and woke only once during the night, but since those golden days, she has had many a growth spurt and will now wake up twice a night! A couple of weeks ago, she was waking up anywhere from 3-5 times a night and I was not a pretty sight in the morning! But she is finally settling down.
She doesn't have any teeth yet but is drooling all over the place and is biting on anything she can get her hands on. I was absolutely amazed at how well she could eat a plain rice cracker with no teeth! She just gummed down and sucked away on it until she could break a piece of! Genius!

To commemorate this day, I have given our tiny living room a little kiwiana nursery makeover! Reia woke up and saw the bold pictures and print and just stared at them for a while. It's exciting to know that one day she will be able to recognize what they are and will be able to recite them to me!

R is for Rugby, E is for Eel, I is for Iceblock, A is for Aotearoa!

1 Whale, 2 Kiwis 3 Weta...

When I look back at her newborn pics, I can't believe how tiny she used to be. And I look at her now and she's HUGE! She's the same size as all the 10 month babies in Japan hehe! But she will always be my little snuggle bunny :D

Can't stand yet but loves to try! Just so you know, I caught her before she fell on her face! Spiderman reflexes, I tell ya!
