Taiki's 3rd Month

Today marks Taiki's 3rd month of life. It also marks his first fever.

I woke up this morning at 1am to a very hot and distressed little boy. He was really hot, you could tell straight away that this was a big one. I tried soothing him for an hour, but after nothing seemed to be working, I woke up Jun and asked him to call the hospital. Jun administered a blessing first and then called the hospital. The doctors said to bring him in to check him out. Because he is 3 months exactly, the protocol for what to do was a bit confusing. If it was a day before and he was still considered 2 months, they would have reacted more urgently. If he was a month and 1 day, they would have reacted a bit more calmly. But he was on the border in that grey area. To a parent, it's not that grey (more like frustrating!), but I guess that's how it is at this particular hospital. Jun took him in at 3am while I stayed with the girls and they pretty much just checked him and said to go back home and keep an eye on him to see how he develops. Well today was a Sunday, so everyone went to church except Taiki and I. Jun and I were still both so exhausted from that night, we were running close to empty. Taiki's fever gradually went from a 38.8 to a 39.5. He wasn't drinking much at all and was throwing up a little bit. I told Jun about all of this and he came home so we could take Taiki to the hospital again.
By the time we got there, he was at 39.9. None of my children have had such a high fever before so as you can imagine I was pretty nervous and anxious to see what was going on with my little boy. He wasn't my smiley boy anymore, he was lethargic and sluggish. We waited about 2 hours to see the Doctor. After being checked, the Doctor could not find any other symptoms except for a high fever. He wasn't coughing, his ears were fine, no runny nose, no rash, no swelling, urine was clean... The Doctor was stumped. Taiki had a really high fever only. We didn't get a diagnosis, but we did get some suppositories finally to bring his fever down. It was a long day today, and he is still fighting this thing as we speak, but let's hope that as he gets through it that it only makes him stronger!

Month 3 is over! Here is how he has developed:

My little boy suddenly isn't so little anymore. He is out of newborn nappies and has small rolls around his knees, elbows and chin! As of today, he is 6.66kgs. He has doubled!

He laughs and smiles when people talk to him. Sometimes he even laughs on his own just randomly which gives me a fright!

He sleeps a lot during the day and it takes a while for him to fall asleep for the night. But once he is down, he only wakes again once or not at all. Very big plus.

He likes to drink every 3 hours or so.

His legs are now just long enough that I can get him to straddle my waist when he is in the carrier, instead of having his feet sticking out at the bottom.

He is starting to look a lot more like Reia than any of us.

He hasn't rolled over yet but his neck muscles are quite strong! I think it's because we hold him upright instead of sideways. He gets to use his neck muscles that way. He can keep his head up but can't look up yet and will sometimes dip backwards.

He loves to suck on things. When he is not on the boob, he tries to suck on his fists or his thumb if he can find it. Once he did find it, but it was paired with his index finger!

He is quite a chill baby and only complains if he is hungry, sleepy, or his nappy is full.

He likes being held, as most babies do.

He also likes to stand up on his own with some help and will just smile the whole time.

He coo's for longer now. If you talk back to him he will stop, but if you leave him be, he will go on for a bit saying "ooh, ooh, ooh" over again.

He only brays like a horse sometimes now but I still love it! It reminds me of when he was smaller.

This month, we actually went on a road trip to Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kyoto! He did pretty well and slept most of the way. There were some screams, but he survived! When Jun and I went on a date to Universal Studio's, it was the first time I had left him on his own. It was a struggle at home for the grandparents and Megumi, but they eventually got him to drink out of the bottle and put him to sleep. When I got home, the first thing I did was PUMP!! Two words: Rock. Solid! I think that conjures up enough imagery.

I think he might be my most social baby so far. I can't really remember though. He is just so smiley! I love it!

He is always flicking his tongue out and pushing bubbles out onto his lips. He is always getting his clothes wet from this so he needs to wear a bib.

Listening to music box lullabies helps him fall asleep. They played the same sort of stuff in the nursery when he was born so maybe it stuck?

Like I said in the beginning, he is suffering now with a fever and it sucks so much to see him in pain. I hope he gets better soon so he can go back to being my smiley boy!

Love you, Son x

Aila is 3

Aila is THREE!

I can finally say that she looks her age! She looks like she is 3, going on 4 over here so when I used to tell people that she was only 2, they would look at me in disbelief.

She is such a character, this girl! She lays out all her emotions and leaves them for you to deal with haha. Here is how she has developed these past 6 months:

She likes to play with bottles, cans, cups, and anything else that she can line up or arrange by size or colour. Lately she has been playing with her 4 teletubbies and giving each of them a tube of toothpaste that corresponds to their individual colours. She also likes stacking things, making towers. She likes to do this all by herself and is quite content with doing it all on her own.

She is very vocal and is not afraid of expressing her opinion. She will often mimic me and use my exact words to tell me off when she is feeling angry or frustrated.

Her eczema has blown up in the last couple of months. It is around her eyes, her underarms, chest, back, legs, pretty much everywhere and it causes her so much grief that she wakes up scratching and crying in the middle of the night. We have steroid ointment from the doctor but I know we need to heal her from the inside out instead of simply reducing the symptoms.

She is quite the little actress! She is always role playing and mimicking what she hears other people say. The funniest one lately is how she copies how Peppa Pig says "pleeease?" She really likes to get into character and go all out.

She still sings at the top of her lungs and belts out ballads while we are on outings without a care of who is watching her.

Aila has shot up! All of a sudden, she was tall enough to reach turn on the lights and sit on the toilet without a stool. Because of this, she can now go to the toilet by herself and wash her hands by herself. She still chooses, however, to call out from the toilet "Aaaall finiiiished Maamaaaaa" on repeat unto I go to her! It is hilarious when she ups the pitch and volume to be heard lol

It takes her a while to figure out how to blow her nose. She will either sniff or blow air out of her mouth. It takes a good demonstration from either Jun or I for her to figure it out.

Her eczema has spread to her face now. It is under her left eye and under her nose. Poor thing gets so itchy, we have had to cover the sores on her elbows and wrists with bandages.

She always closes the doors now. She doesn't like them open anymore. I think it's because the hallway is a bit dark and scary.

We found out that her eczema, isn't actually eczema but is a bacterial infection. We were able to get some medicine and it has improved A LOT!

She likes to win now and will always try and beat Reia at everything. She will cry when she knows she is losing and will laugh when she is winning. Poor Reia has to be the bigger person all the time and let her win or settle for a tie. They both always want to greet Jun when he comes home from work and Reia will want to hold hands and walk down the hallway together so they both win, but if she doesn't catch Aila in time, Aila will bolt ahead, squealing as she goes. Most times though, it usually ends with Aila not wanting to hold hands and win together and with her lying on the floor screaming because she lost.

It was her birthday today! She did not sleep until after 12am the night before so we had to wake her up before Jun left for work. In her groggy state, she still appreciated her "celebration" and loved the balloons I hung up for her. Throughout the whole day, I think the highlight for her were the decorations in the house and the cake. Those two things made it feel like it was her birthday. Although, there was a point where in the morning she was searching the house for her shiny party hat that I didn't have. Missed the memo on that one. I'm sure that was something she saw on Peppa Pig!

They ate ice cream for breakfast. I thought, what the hey and let them have it! I also got Aila a Finding Dory bath bomb and her and Reia couldn't wait to use it and see what was inside the bomb so they had an early morning bath. I welcomed the time to clean up a little.

She has the hugest feet. Definitely gets it from me! lol She is about 16cm and Reia is about 17cm! Buying shoes for her has been a nightmare because she can't fit the shoes that Reia wore at her age anymore and can almost fit Reia's shoes now, but they are still too long. So I have debated for a long time whether or not to let her squeeze into Reia's 2-3 year old ones or clomp around in her 4-5 year old ones. Because of her birthday, I just decided to buy 3 pairs of them and let her be comfy and lessen the risk of her falling over herself even though I know she is bound to grow out of them soon!

Aila is definitely a character! She is not afraid to let you know when she is unhappy. She loves kissing and cuddling. She is either in a good mood, or a cranky mood. She is still clumsy and falls over everything. She still eats with her hands rather than a fork. She hates washing her hair and will let out blood curdling screams during the process. She is obsessed with Peppa Pig and speaks in a British accent and even cries like George.

She can be a handful at times but she is so fun and loving at the same time. I love how imaginative and expressive she is.

Summer Party 2016

Reia's Youchien had their nouryoukai/summer party the other week. We were pretty that day so we were only able to make the dancing part and had to miss the games and food. Reia was really excited to wear her pink yukata. I had taken hers and Aila's out of the closet to air out and keep straight which only added to the excitement. I sat her down to do her hair and you could tell that she was enjoying being pampered. She gave me her excited/embarrassed/mouth-wide-open smile once she saw the end result! She couldn't wait to go and was tired of waiting for Daddy to come back from the farm and for Aila to wake up. I started dressing Aila in her sleep, and if you know Aila, you'll know that she is the GRUMPIEST girl ever when she wakes up! It takes her like an hour to fully wake up normally, but once she saw the yutaka, she was wide awake and let me dress her up and do her hair. She was also looking forward to wearing it. Taki wore his blue whale jinbei that he got from his Obaachan.

Once we got there, the food and activities had finished and the bon dance was about to start. Reia went and found her teacher and lined up with her class. She is the third from the back of the line which means she is the 3rd tallest in her class. She looked so happy and excited to be amongst her classmates!

Next year will be her last. Reia is already saying that she doesn't want to go up to Primary school an wants to stay in Youchien forever! She is having so much fun there :)

Here's to keeping cool this summer!
